LRT tragedy: Take multi-dimensional approach in probing the case

THE Government should cover all angles of the recent Light Rail Transit (LRT) train crash when investigating the root cause of the incident. “In the past, we had some glitches in the rail line but this is the first time we saw a major incident. The authorities must look into the standard operating procedures (SOPs) practiced by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd. “For example, why did they allow a malfunctioning train to be driven on an active rail line, during peak hours at one of the most packed areas like the KLCC?” HELP University Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting and Institute Crime and Criminology senior lecturer R Paneir Selvam told FocusM. On Monday, a manually driven LRT train collided with an automated one in a tunnel near KLCC, leaving 47 seriously hurt and another 166 with light injuries. Prasarana later announced a RM1,000 compensation for affected parties but the public criticised the company for the paltry sum, calling for it be hauled up in court. Transport Mi

COVID-19, Palestinian conflict may inspire terror attacks everywhere

FOUR days ago, the Royal Malaysian Police shot dead five people, suspected of being members of the Filipino terror organisation, Abu Sayyaf, during a gun-fight in Sabah. One of the deceased was the group’s sub-commander, Mabar Binda. According to Sabah police chief Hazani Ghazali, the incident may trigger retaliation of the notorious group, who has been operating in the seas for decades. While Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) head told in April that the pandemic had indirectly helped to reduce terrorism threats in Malaysia, an academic said the recent incident proved that the notion was wrong. “Even then, I disagreed with the assessment. With COVID-19 and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, terror groups could take advantage of the situation to inspire their supporters and sympathisers to carry out attacks in Malaysia. “The recent rioting in Johor is a disturbing trend. It shows that a small number of young people in Malaysia are dissatisfied with the current pol

Israel’s threat is serious, place Hamas leaders and their kin in safe houses

WITH Israel threatening to take out key Hamas leaders across the globe, an academic has urged the Malaysian authorities not to take the matter lightly. “Israel has two intelligence agencies, one is Shin Bet which deals with internal security issues, like our Special Branch. “The other one is Mossad, where they conduct operations outside the country. After World War 2, many Nazi leaders escaped to Europe and Argentina but this agency managed to assassinate or capture some of them to face trials in Israel. “Mossad is that capable. Look at what they did to Iran’s uranium enrichment plan in Natanz,” HELP University Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting and Institute Crime and Criminology senior lecturer R Panier Selvam told FocusM. Two days ago, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said that all national security agencies have stepped up their security measures following Israel’s threat. “The Home Ministry calls on the public to remain calm as the country’s security situation
