Marawi, Movida and ISIS in South East Asia

It has been more than a month the Marawi City has been attack by ISIS. In Mosul, ISIS was defeated and in Raqqa the coalition forces almost took over the capital of the caliphate. Many foreign fighters of ISIS are now returning home or going to 'other' battle grounds. ISIS wants to recreate its caliphate elsewhere. South East Asia seems to be more suitable for them. The ongoing 'war' in Marawi is a solid evidence to prove this notion. A year ago, ISIS landed in Malaysia officially when it launched its attack in Movida Bar, Puchong. Unlike in Philippines where ISIS wanted to establish a ‘ wilayat’ or region like in Syria and Iraq, in Malaysia they just want to show their presence. Therefore, future attacks in Malaysia and other parts of South East Asia will be similar as the attacks in Paris, London and Berlin. In Malaysia, ISIS is going to use 'soft weapons' like knife, vehicles (car, motorcycle, van, tanker lorry or container lorr...

Marawi City - The Conquest of ISIS

Almost a month Marawi City is under siege. Where else in Raqqa and Mosul, ISIS is in near defeat. The foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) who are hailed from Syria and Iraq are slowly relocating themselves in South East Asia, now. That’s because recently ISIS has declared this region as part of their ‘wilayah’ or province. In 2016, the jihadists killed 4 people and injured more than 20 people in Jakarta. Malaysia also encountered it first terrorist attack in Movida Club, Puchong where 8 people were wounded. In the same year in Davao, 14 people were killed by Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) which associated with ISIS. This year in Jakarta 3 were killed and 11 were wounded by dual suicide attacks inspired by ISIS and the ongoing slaughtering by Maute Group which affiliated with ISIS killed more than 100 people and displaced thousands of people including women and children. Many analysts in past have predicted ISIS is going to launch a massive attack in this region. Unfortunately the g...

London Mosque Attack - An Analysis

Yesterday, London is under siege again. Nowadays, terror attacks in London or in UK become norm. The current situation is very much similar with the era of IRA threat in UK. The common assumption is every terrorist attacks in UK or elsewhere will be executed by jihadists who got the inspiration from ISIS or Al Qaeda propaganda tools.  But this terror attack in particular is conducted by a white terrorist. His target was Muslims. Interestingly he used the similar methods (a vehicle i.e. a van as a weapon) used by the terrorists in London attacks last month. The van driver, Darren Osborne is killed one person and more than 10 people were injured. He used the van and run down the pedestrians. His motive is unknown until now. He probably wants to retaliate the attacks done by jihadists around the world in recent times especially in UK. He wants the Muslims to feel what he felt when innocent non-Muslims killed by these jihadists. The latest attack is happened outside of t...

An Analysis on the UK General Election

Latest Update: UK has a hung parliament now. Even though the Conservative has won the election but it need to strike out a partnership with other parties (presumably with DUP) but how its can last? Whether  Theresa May has the right to be continued as the Prime Minister of UK even though she fails to get mandate from people of UK? In my view, there will be another election in near future (my guess only) because the current set up of Parliament is unsustainable. If there is another snap election then I strongly believe Labour Party can win the election with landslide. 9/7/17                                                                                                                   ...

United Kingdom under siege, again: The root causes of current terrorist attacks

An Introduction: The United Kingdom United Kingdom is under siege. Last Saturday in London, seven people were killed and more than 45 people were injured in two incidents which occurred on London Bridge and Borough Market. According to the security forces, three suspected terrorists were shot dead. These attacks are very much similar to the attack which happened in London last March. They used a van and knifes as the weapon for these attacks. This paradigm of such attacks is worrying because it’s become unpredictable for intelligence and security forces to prevent it. Therefore, now, the world become more dangerous to live on. A terrorist can launch any attacks anywhere and whenever he wishes. The timing and target of place where this terrorist attack happened in very much similar with Paris attacks last year. Last Month in Manchester, a lone suicide bomber, Salman Abedi killed more than 20 people including children and injured 110 others. The British-born terrorist whose paren...

Manchester Bombing and ISIS: The Future Threats

Last Monday in Manchester, a lone suicide bomber, Salman Ramadan Abedi killed 22 people including children and injured more than 59 others. The British-born terrorist of Libyan parents recently returned from Libya. The countries like Libya, Somalia, Syria and Iraq are considered as incubators or hot spots for terrorist recruitment. The timing and target of place where this terrorist attack happened in very much similar to Paris attacks last year. Interestingly he does not raised any alarm within the radar of the intelligence and security forces in United Kingdom. Further his profile does fit for the current characteristic of terrorists globally.  He is young, son of the immigrants parents, drop out from his studies, involved with petty crimes and associated with extremist groups. Further he is from Manchester and his knowledge on the target area is vital for success of this attack. ISIS has praised him as the solider of the caliphate after the attack. This is a most recent de...

Hate Crimes and FBI

Hate Crimes Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s Civil Rights program, not only because of the devastating impact they have on families and communities, but also because groups that preach hatred and intolerance can plant the seed of terrorism here in our country. The Bureau investigates hundreds of these cases every year and works to detect and deter further incidents through law enforcement training, public outreach, and partnerships with a myriad of community groups. Traditionally, FBI investigations of hate crimes were limited to crimes in which the perpetrators acted based on a bias against the victim’s race, color, religion, or national origin. In addition, investigations were restricted to those wherein the victim was engaged in a federally protected activity. With the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, the Bureau became authorized to investigate these crimes without this prohibition. This landmark legislati...

Beware of well-trained thieves

By Sheith Khidhir Bin Abu Bakar   PETALING JAYA: A criminologist has urged members of the public to be alert against well-trained thieves. R Paneir Selvam, chairman of the Association of Legal and Policy Researchers, told FMT he believed many thieves on the prowl today had improved their art because they were receiving top-notch training. He said the recent CCTV footage of a pickpocketing incident at Sunway Pyramid appeared to show that the culprits had received such training. According to a report on the incident, fifteen seconds was all it took for the victim to lose her mobile phone to the thieves. “There’s a possibility these thieves received their training from a guild for thieves either inside or outside the country,” Selvam said. He said the two pickpockets, who appeared to be women, could well be members of an international crime syndicate. “Organised crime operates internationally,” he said. “What usually happens is they send these people to go to a pa...

Terrorist Groups Part 1

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP):  The PFLP, one of the original members of the PLO,  is a Marxist-Leninist group founded in 1967 by George Habash. The group was against the 1993 Declaration of Principles; participation in the PLO was also suspended. Participated in meetings with Arafat's Fatah party and PLO representatives in 1999 to discuss national unity but continues to oppose negotiations with Israel. Committed numerous international terrorist attacks during the 1970s, has allegedly been involved in attacks against Israel since the beginning of the second intifadah in September 2000. Syria has been a key source of safe haven and limited logistical support. Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC):  This group, led by Ahmed Jibril, split from the PFLP in 1968, wanting to focus more on terrorist than political action; violently opposed to the PLO and is closely tied to Syria and Iran. The PFLP-GC conducted mul...
